Traditionally, the first golfing fashions had a practical reason. The traditional red coats, for example, warned fellow users of the commonly held links-land, not involved in the game, that golfers were about.
Today, most clubs have rules governing what is permitted to be worn on the golf course. Not unoften, collarless shirts and untailored shorts, as well as denim, are barred.
Over the years practical items have been added to the golfer's outfit, such as spiked shoes and lightweight fabrics that keep golfers protected from rainy weather and transport perspiration away from the skin.
